Drug Policy Alliance, working together with the Los Angeles Department of Public Health through a grant from the California Endowment, is pleased to announce the implementation of a new program designed to promote public health and reduce HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C infection throughout Los Angeles County. Effective February 01, 2007, the Disease Prevention Demonstration Project (DPDP) now allows participating pharmacies to dispense up to ten needles and syringes to all adults without a prescription. This program is a major step forward for groups like the uninsured and low wage earners who may not have continuing access to doctors and renewed prescriptions.

Once enrolled, your pharmacy is then able to furnish or sell syringes to all adults who request them. You do not need to record identifying information about the individuals purchasing the syringes in a sharps log, nor do you need to establish the nature of the intended of the syringes. You can simply sell or furnish up to 10 syringes per transaction to any adult who wishes to buy them. It's that easy!
